Honoring Service, Leadership, and Global Impact

The documentary Kremlin to Kremlin: The Joseph J. Roane Story tells the remarkable life story of Joseph J. Roane—an African American leader whose journey from humble beginnings to international diplomacy reflects resilience, excellence, and historic achievement. His story is one of determination, breaking barriers, and representing the United States on a global stage during a pivotal era in world history.

Joseph J. Roane’s life bridges two worlds—both geographically and historically. The film highlights his service during a time when African Americans faced systemic discrimination at home, yet were called to represent democracy and freedom abroad. Through military service, public leadership, and diplomatic engagement, Roane became part of a generation that helped reshape America’s image on the world stage.

The title Kremlin to Kremlin reflects Roane’s unique diplomatic role, symbolizing connections between centers of power and the broader global dialogue of the Cold War era. His work demonstrated not only professional excellence, but also the quiet strength required to navigate complex political and cultural landscapes while carrying the weight of representation.

For communities in Westmoreland County and across Virginia, stories like Roane’s are powerful reminders that African American history is not only local—it is national and international. His achievements underscore how individuals from small communities can make a lasting global impact.

Documentaries such as this serve an important role in preservation. They ensure that stories of leadership, service, and perseverance are not lost to time. By sharing Joseph J. Roane’s journey, Kremlin to Kremlin helps expand the narrative of American history—highlighting voices and contributions that deserve recognition and remembrance.

As we continue to preserve and elevate African American history, films like this inspire future generations to pursue excellence, lead with integrity, and understand the power of their own story.

A.T. Johnson High School Director Marian Ashton co-produced the documentary Kremlin To Kremlin along with Jon Bachman of Stratford Hall, a museum that is part of the Virginia Historical Society.

"My passion for sharing this...is to introduce and engage the minds of all persons, especially the youth," Ashton says. "Hopefully they notice that these are ordinary people who just happened to have done some extraordinary things."

The schoolhouse museum that Ashton runs features a small exhibit space that includes artifacts from Joseph Roane's life, including a fur hat and vest that he brought back from Uzbekistan.
